Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Church of Kansas City
|
Our Church
Coptic immigrants resided in the Kansas City area since the 1960's and as
in many other communities in the USA, they brought with them the millennial
ancestral faith and church rites. The Coptic Church was established by St
Mark the Evangelist in the First Century AD and lives ever since. It has
significant contribution to Christendom. The writings of Origen, Clemet and
many other scholars of the old theological school in Alexandria,
Monasticism; established by St Anthony, and the defense of the faith by St.
Athanasius the Apostolic; author of the Christian Creed, are contributions of
the Coptic Church. Copts count about 12 Million as their members and
constitute a vibrant and patriotic element of the modern Egyptian society.
Copts in Kansas City established their church in the 1970’s. Over the
years, St. Mark has been served by several clergy members from larger
Coptic churches in the United States. St. Mark has also had the privilege of
several visits from Coptic Bishops stationed in the USA as well as from
various Bishops from Egypt. In 1993, St. Mark congregation purchased the
building they reside in today at 10024 West 49th Street in Merriam, Kansas
(a suburb of the Kansas City Metropolitan area). St. Mark Coptic Orthodox
Church of Kansas City is home to approximately 30 families. Services are
conducted weekly and include Vespers, Holy Mass, Bible Study, Youth
Meeting, and Sunday School.
